Review: How I learned to stop worrying and love the deathly delights of 'Elden Ring'

Looking back, I don't know why I agreed to do this, why I submitted myself to video game masochism. I don't know why I thought my first experience with a FromSoftware game would be like every other video game review: 30 hours gone, game finished, review written, thank you and goodnight.

And yet — 30 hours into Elden Ring, I've barely made a dent. I didn't realize until now that I could have so much fun making myself so miserable.

Beauty and brutality

Elden Ring is forbidding, majestic, and sick in every sense of the word. Its overarching story about a fallen kingdom is deliberately obtuse — an unspecified amount was written by Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin, the rest by Dark Souls mastermind Hidetaka Miyazaki. Its setting, the Lands Between, is filled with countless little delights, like the roaming sheep that roll away armadillo style when you get too close. But they're also home to countless nightmares, like giant dragonflies that harass you while you're menaced by roving bands of desiccated peasants, towering knights, or flame-breathing dragons. These vast landscapes largely replace the dense, layered levels that Dark Souls was famous for. In Elden Ring, though, the opportunity to survey diverse terrain — whether a noxious swampland or gusty prairie — produces an injection of gaming dopamine (and some genuine fear, too).

It's made all the better by your trusty steed, Torrent — a beautiful creature resembling an elk. Whistle and he'll materialize beneath you, ready to ride. While he's inaccessible in the game's many dungeons, Torrent also gives you an offensive edge, as you can cut down hordes from atop the saddle better than you could on foot. His best feature, however, is his double-jump. Yes, that's right — Breath of the Wild horses have nothing on him! Use Torrent to hop up cliffs or leap down ravines to mitigate fall damage that would normally kill you. But take care; while Torrent can make you feel invincible, great heights or particularly surly adversaries can still defeat you.

Yet despite these innovations in world design and traversal, FromSoftware remains true to their traditional boss formula, often throwing you — a comparatively puny warrior — into a dimly-lit colosseum to brawl with some gruesomely powerful cretin. But when this gruesomely powerful cretin's health bar is finally sliced down to zero, after quite literally 43 tries (yes, I counted for the first boss), that's when the celebration ensues. It looks like this: a 24-year old with sweaty palms and a sprinting heart rate jumps off his couch and screams, "F*** YES! FINALLY!" and hurriedly texts his roommate the news.

A sparse, grim world

Elden Ring's aesthetic also deserves recognition, even if it doesn't match the glamor or realism of rival open world games. Instead, it goes out of its way to make you feel small. The Erdtree – gargantuan and golden – looms over the entire map, its flaxen, ethereal leaves falling slowly to the deathly ground beneath it. It's a shining beacon in an otherwise dark, medieval world, seemingly always out of reach. While the terrain can be sparse, replete with interchangeable ruins, I find myself often retreating from the endless onslaught to take a screenshot of my surroundings. Stormveil Castle's busted turrets or the murky waters of Liurnia of the Lakes provide a mystifying backdrop while you're slowly poisoned, bloodied or ripped to shreds.

It's during these moments of pain and suffering, however, where Elden Ring paradoxically shines brightest. In other titles, death can feel cheap. Nintendo games, for instance, aren't that challenging, so combat can feel arbitrary; after internalizing an enemy's simple attack pattern, most experienced gamers will win after a few tries.

Elden Ring, by contrast, refuses to hold your hand. An enemy takes three massive swings, and before you can evade, a final anticipatory strike takes out the rest of your precious health bar. The game constantly backs you into a corner, forcing you to make snap decisions. You'll dodge prematurely into an opponent's ax. You'll lunge only to misjudge the distance and end up exposed. In a desperate retreat, you'll find yourself impaled on an unseen enemy's blade. But practice does eventually make perfect. Besting a boss is a wave of pure relief and satisfaction unlike any I've felt in other video games.

A little help from friends

Thankfully, you're not alone in the fight. Elden Ring follows prior Souls games in allowing you to summon other characters or players to help. But it also innovates with a system not unlike Pokemon. You can collect Spirit Ashes of enemies, allowing you to occasionally beckon versions of them as allies. Even if the ghostly dogs, skeletons, or jellyfish aren't great for dishing damage, they distract foes for long enough to help even the odds.

What surprised me most about Elden Ring, though, is how much I genuinely laughed out loud while playing. It's astonishingly hard, but rather than mutter and groan, I was reassured to know that other players will experience the exact same trials and tribulations. At a time where lots of people, including myself, are anxious, I wasn't sure I'd want to play something so punishing. It's easy to pick up my staple games for Nintendo Switch and shut off my brain. But after realizing how exciting it was to conquer my fears, explore the Lands Between, and die over and over, Elden Ring became a joy, especially as my roommate watched on and laughed at my inevitable destruction.

'Everyone's OK': 2 Black Hawk helicopters crashed near a Utah resort, frightening skiers

Two Black Hawk helicopters crashed near a Utah ski resort Tuesday morning, scaring nearby skiers but miraculously leaving no one injured.

The crash involving Utah National Guard UH-60 helicopters was reported southeast of the Snowbird ski resort just outside of Salt Lake City. It happened during a routine mountain training exercise and they were supposed to land about 150 yards from the ski area, said Utah National Guard spokesman Jared Jones at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

Both helicopters were damaged and the incident is being investigated,, the Utah National Guard said in a tweet.

Witness Robbie Shine told The Salt Lake Tribune he was about 200 yards from the crash site, while another group of people he saw were “within feet” of one of helicopters when it hit the ground.

“It was close. It was a pretty scary event,” Shine told the Tribune. “I think they were intending to be further away in the landing zone. ... Just glad everyone walked away.”

Video captured from a ski lift at the resort showed a cloud of powder and parts of the helicopter flying into the air, according to the video published by local outlet KUTV.

“They all rushed from one helicopter on the ground to the back helicopter. Nobody came out of the back helicopter for like 10 minutes,” Jacob Oster, whose friend recorded the cell phone video, told KUTV. “It definitely shook me."Other witnesses saw a rotor and debris from one of the helicopters fly out of the powder cloud in the direction of a ski lift, according to the Associated Press.

Skier Noah Sikorski, 18, said he saw the helicopters go down at a flat area that's often used for snowmobile lessons. The landing appeared to be controlled at first but then he became alarmed when debris hurtled toward the chairlift he was on. Later, he watched four National Guard members carry a stretcher with gear and equipment.

Jones, with the National Guard, said that no fuel was spilled and that all training flights have been canceled until further notice.

Two helicopter crashes involving the National Guard occurred last year: In January, a UH-60 Black Hawk crashed during a training exercise in New York and killed three people. A month later in Boise, Idaho, a similar crash killed three.

The crash remains under investigation and the vehicles will be removed from the area over the next few days.

“We do train on edge so that we’re ready for a combat environment anywhere in the world and the crew assumes some level of risk," Jones said. "Every time you fly a helicopter there’s a little bit of danger involved. I’m just happy everyone’s OK."

Mark Lanegan, Singer for Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age, Dies at 57

Mark Lanegan, who followed a long stint as lead vocalist for the proto-grunge band Screaming Trees with a distinguished career as an impassioned solo singer-songwriter and adventurous collaborator with Queens of the Stone Age and others, has died. A cause of death was not announced, although last year he was said to be suffering from Covid-19 and kidney disease; he was 57.

“Our beloved friend Mark Lanegan passed away this morning at his home in Killarney, Ireland,” reads a statement on his Twitter account. “A beloved singer, songwriter, author and musician he was 57 and is survived by his wife Shelley. No other information is available at this time. The family asks everyone to respect their privacy at this time.”

Sometimes recording under the nickname “Dark Mark,” Lanegan lived up to his sobriquet, in his work focusing on what he termed continuing themes of “loss, longing, mortality and chemical dependence” in original songs couched in music that alternated between loud, unfettered power and a hushed lyricism. Some of his deepest material was inspired by a harrowing life of dissolution, crime and addiction.

In 1985, Lanegan was already a blackout alcoholic with a long juvenile arrest record. He was repossessing rented videocassette players for a video store in his hometown of Ellensburg, Wash. — a small rural town southeast of Seattle where he was born on Nov. 25, 1964 — when he started a band with his boss’ sons, guitarist Gary Lee Conner and bassist Van Conner.

The lure of fame and the rock ‘n’ roll road appealed to the rebellious, discontented Lanegan. “I wanted excitement, adventure, decadence, depravity, anything, everything,” he wrote in his harrowing 2020 memoir “Sing Backwards and Weep,” adding, “I would never find any of it in this dusty, isolated cow town. If the band could get me out, could get me into that life I so craved, it was worth any indignity, any hardship, any torture.”

With Lanegan serving as their imposing baritone front man, Screaming Trees was a psychedelia-tinged hard rock unit whose heavyweight early albums prefigured the explosion of grunge rock in Washington state. Attention-getting records for Southern California punk label SST Records prefaced a major-label contract with Epic. After the group’s 1990 debut for the label — which was co-produced by Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell — their single “Nearly Lost You” was prominently featured in Cameron Crowe’s celluloid love letter to the Seattle scene, “Singles,” and became an alternative-radio smash. Powered by that single, the Trees’ second major-label debut “Sweet Oblivion,” drove the band to to national prominence.

By that time, Lanegan had embarked on an embryonic solo career: His 1990 Sub Pop debut “The Winding Sheet” featured appearances by Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic of Nirvana (who would later perform Lanegan’s arrangement of Lead Belly’s “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” at their “MTV Unplugged” appearance).

In his 2017 collection of lyrics “I Am the Wolf,” Lanegan reels off a list of artists who influenced that album’s music – including his friend and idol Jeffrey Lee Pierce of the Gun Club, Leonard Cohen, John Cale, Nick Cave and Ian Curtis of Joy Division — whose impact would be felt repeatedly over the course of a 30-year solo career.

Chelsea - Lille: time, channel, line-up, info on the Champions League round of 16 first leg

For its second appearance in the round of 16 of the Champions League, LOSC is heading to the field of the Blues, reigning champions.

By finishing first in its group, Lille certainly hoped to avoid a European heavyweight, certainly not the reigning European champion but the draw, proved facetious for the Northerners, opposing them twice (the draw had been restarted after an error in the selection of the balls, note) Chelsea. A hell of a piece for the Mastiffs' second appearance at this stage of the competition and which will force them to deliver a great performance because the slightest weakness, the slightest error will be exploited. Undoubtedly, Jocelyn Gourvennec knows the challenge facing him and his men but the Breton does not present himself as an expiatory victim. "We are competitors, so we will not play Chelsea as a sparring partner ," he promised combatively.

If Lille is not at its best in the Championship, with a draw last weekend against Metz (0-0) which stuck it in the soft underbelly of the classification, and lacks efficiency in front of these last weeks, it has changed its face on the European scene. After a sluggish first half, the French champion broke free and finished the group stage in a cannonball line-up with three convincing successes.

It is on this basis that Gourvennec will build with a well-defined plan. The Breton does not want his team to suffer and go to hinder his prestigious opponent. “Like all teams, when they defend by running towards their goal, they are less comfortable and a little more vulnerable, so the challenge will be to get out of this pressing to go and play behind their backs and especially behind them. side", exposes Gourvennec, who would see himself replaying a bad blow to Thomas Tuchel, as in the Coupe de la Ligue in 2019 where his Guingamp had been eliminated the German PSG in the quarter-finals at the Parc des Princes (2-1).2gether The Movie 2021One for the Road 2022Moonfall 2022Jujutsu Kaisen 0 線上看Uncharted 線上看Fishbowl Wives 線上看Death on the Nile 線上看Spider-Man: No Way Home 線上看

Tuchel knows the trap
Tuchel, he has not forgotten the trap of the Costaarmoricans and also knows what to expect with LOSC, just like Thiago Silva and Edouard Mendy, fine connoisseurs of Ligue 1. A rough and alert opposition which will have nothing to lose against a much more prestigious opponent. "We all know how physical French football is, how physical the attacking players are, how solid they are in one-on-ones, very disciplined on the ball, and LOSC are lucky to play this match as underdogs" , weighed in on the German technician.

An opportunity and at the same time a handicap because playing in the round of 16 cannot be improvised and Chelsea knows how to negotiate this kind of meeting. Above all, the Blues are a cold-blooded beast. If he stalled in the Premier League unable to keep up with the insane pace of Manchester City and Liverpool, the London club has regained a positive dynamic and has just chained 6 successes in a row in all competitions and won the World Cup in the process.

clubs. To continue his momentum, he will rely on his identified strengths, namely a quality defense orchestrated around the Mendy-Kanté axis and an ability to carry danger at all times with Jorginho maneuvering to serve Lukaku, Zyiech and Pulisic, able to sow discord in any defence.
Lille will not be surprised but the challenge will not be less for a champion of France who is looking for a present and a European future. Falling on the outgoing winner was probably not the expected draw, nor the simplest but perhaps the best to test yourself, let go of everything and above all regret nothing. "On matches like that, it's not where you try things or invent things. We have to be ourselves ," said Gourvennec. It's up to his players to show it.

What time will the Chelsea v Lille match take place?
The round of 16 first leg between Chelsea and Lille will take place from 9 p.m. on the side of the Stamford Bridge stadium in London.

What channel will the Chelsea vs Lille match be broadcast on?
The quarter-final between Chelsea and Lille will be broadcast live on Canal+, which has the first choice on each day of the Champions League and RMC Sports 1.

What streaming broadcast for the Chelsea – Lille match?

The meeting between N'Golo Kanté's Cheslea and Jonathan David's Lille will be available for streaming on the MyCanal platform.

What are the predictions for the Chelsea vs Lille match?
BetClic: Chelsea: 1.31 / Draw: 5.45 / Lille: 10.50
Bwin: Chelsea: 1.29 / Draw: 5.00 / Lille: 8.75

What are the probable compositions of Chelsea and Lille?
Chelsea: Mendy – Thiago Silva, Rüdiger, Christensen – Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Kanté, Alonso – Ziyech, Lukaku, Pulisic.

'Euphoria' Season 2, Episode 7 Recap: Welcome to Lexi's World

It's Lexi's world and we are all living in it in Episode 7 of Euphoria Season 2.

The opening night of Lexi's (played by Maude Apatow) play is finally here and if you did not think Season 2 was dramatic enough, grab your popcorn and settle down because Episode 7 will have you feeling all kinds of emotions. It's so complicated and good, you might want to watch it twice.

Episode 7 cleverly, if a little dizzyingly, flashes between the play, real-life moments that happened off stage in the present and in the past, and the audience's reaction to what they are watching. In one of those present-day moments, Fez (Angus Cloud) is preparing to head out to Lexi's play (wearing a suit with roses in hand) but doesn't quite make it. Well, as far as we know…

'Euphoria' Season 2, Episode 7 Recap

OK, so this isn't a performance of Oklahoma! at all. This is the story of Lexi Howard and her life.

'Euphoria' Season 2, Episode 6 Recap

Lexi's play begins by throwing some shade at her sister Cassie, pointing out their differences while also admitting how much she wanted to be just like her as a kid. The actress who plays Cassie on stage is hilarious and has got her impression down to a T.

As Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) looks on from the audience with tears in her eyes, the scene switches to the real-life conversations between Lexi and her older, "more attractive" sister.

Through Lexi's eyes, audiences learn their relationship changed after their dad left and Cassie became friends with Maddy (Alexa Demie). Their father's absence may also explain why Cassie needs validation from men, even if they treat her terribly.

One thing is clear: Lexi became sidelined as she and her sister hit their teens and, as a result, she tried to hold onto her friendship with Rue (Zendaya), which was slowly falling apart.

Rue

As Rue watches from the audience, she can't take her eyes off Jules (Hunter Schafer), who also keeps turning around to try to catch Rue staring. The pair haven't spoken since Jules attempted to stage an intervention, apart from an awkward encounter where Rue muttered a half-hearted "'sup?"

In her play, Lexi recalls the moment she walked in on Rue doing drugs after her father's funeral and the fragmentation of their friendship that resulted. The episode then shifts from Lexi's stage to show the real-life moment between the pair in Rue's bedroom that day, with Rue passed out on the bed and Lexi trying to recite a comforting poem.

In the present day and away from Lexi's play, Rue is hanging at home with her mom Leslie (Nika King), who blurts out her fear that Rue will end her own life. She also makes the heartbreaking admission that if she had to save one of her daughters, she would save Gia (Storm Reid)—a choice that Rue supports.

In the emotional scene, Leslie reveals that Gia has been struggling at school—skipping classes and landing in detention. Leslie also shares her concerns for Gia's mental and physical health in an angry response to Rue claiming her sister was "just fine."

The only good thing to take away from Rue's situation in Episode 7 is that she seemed genuinely healthy and happy, for the first time in a while. Let's hope it lasts.

Maude Apatow as Lexi in Euphoria Season 2. Lexi and Fez may be the latest couple to come out of Euphoria. Eddy Chen/HBO

Fez

Away from Lexi's play, one of the big storylines to play out in real time is about Fez.

For weeks, Euphoria fans have been rooting for Fez and Lexi to get together and after the emotional "Stand By Me" singalong in Episode 6, things looked set to take a romantic turn.

In Episode 7, Fez is getting ready to go to Lexi's play. Dressed in a suit and carrying a bunch of roses, he asks Faye (Chloe Cherry) whether he should wear a tie or not. Things look so very wholesome, but Ash (Javon "Wanna" Walton) can sense something is off when Faye's on-off boyfriend Custer (Tyler Chase) shows up.

Moments before Fez calls Chloe into his bedroom to talk ties, Custer—who is cooperating with the police in the investigation into Mouse's (Meeko Gattuso) disappearance—arrives. It looks like he has placed his phone so he can record his conversations with Fez and Ash, especially after he encouraged Faye to "remain calm" and pushed her to bring Fez back into the living room.

Armed with a knife, Ash sits opposite Custer. He knows something is up and Fez, who is about to head out the door, can sense it too. Unfortunately, that's all the screen time Fez gets in Episode 7.

It looks like Fez did not make it to Lexi's play, but here's hoping that's not because the police have closed in on him.

As long as Ash does not use that knife, hopefully, things will be OK.
