Journalist Vera Girich died in Kyiv. Russian rocket hits his house

Journalist Vera Girich was killed in a shooting in the Ukrainian capital by Russian armed forces on April 28. On Friday, his body was found under the rubble of an apartment building.

The editors of Radio Liberty offer their condolences to Vera Girich's family and say they will remember her as a bright and kind person, a true professional.

The missile attack on the Ukrainian capital was delivered during a visit to Kyiv by UN Secretary-General António Guterres on April 28. He met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, including discussing the possibility of evacuating civilians from Mariupol.

“Immediately after the completion of our negotiations in Kyiv, Russian missiles flew into the city. Five missiles. And this says a lot about Russia's apparent attitude towards global institutions, the Russian leadership's attempts to embarrass the UN and everything the organization embodies. , and required a strong reaction," Zelensky commented on the shooting.

According to a briefing by the Russian Ministry of Defense, the targets of the attack were the buildings of the defense company "Artem".

However, BBC reporters at the scene confirmed that the Russian missile hit, in particular, a 25-story residential building in the Shevchenkovsky district of Kyiv.

"When I arrived at the residential building yesterday, I was in the same housing complex (across the building), I just sat down for dinner. Well, what can I say? ...] their absurdity. When it seems you are protected, you think which film to watch, because the news already makes you heartbroken, suddenly, a few hundred meters from you, the sky falls to the ground, and you watch the news not from a smartphone, but from a balcony," wrote former People's Deputy Alexander Chernenko about the incident it's on Facebook.

It was initially reported that 10 people were injured in the shooting, but there were no fatalities. However, on Friday morning, the mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, said that rescue teams found the bodies of the victims while clearing the rubble.

According to the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, Girich is the 23rd member of the media and press service to die following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Among them was Russian journalist Oksana Baulina, who came under fire in Kyiv in late March. Russian authorities have not reported an investigation into Baulina's death.
