American Idol Alum Caleb Kennedy Charged After Allegedly Killing Person During DUI Crash

 Nearly a year after leaving the 19th season of American Idol due to a controversial video, Caleb Kennedy has been charged with a felony DUI after a car that resulted in a death.

Caleb Kennedy, who appeared on Season 19 of American Idol, has been arrested and charged with a felony DUI following a deadly car crash in South Carolina, police tell E! News.

Kennedy was driving his 2011 Ford pickup on West Murphy Road around noon on Tuesday, Feb. 8, when he drove into a private drive and "struck" a building, the South Carolina Highway Patrol's Mitchell Ridgeway told E! News. The 17-year-old singer, who is from Roebuck, S.C, was charged with felony driving under the influence resulting in death, authorities said.

Ridgeway added, "This crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol."

He was booked in the Spartanburg County Detention Center on a felony DUI death charge, said Murray Glenn, a spokesman for the 7th Circuit Solicitor's Office, in a statement to E! News. A bond hearing will be held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 9.

E! News reached out to Kennedy for comment directly through social media and has not heard back. No lawyer information was available as of Tuesday evening.

This is not the first time Kennedy has made headlines. Last year, after making it to the Top 5 on American Idol, the teen exited the singing competition after a video surfaced online that allegedly showed him next to someone in a white hood reminiscent of those worn by the Ku Klux Klan. "Hey y'all, this is gonna be a bit of a surprise, but I am no longer gonna be on American Idol," Kennedy shared in a statement on Instagram in May. At the time, Kennedy said would be taking time away from social media to "better" himself, adding, "I know this has hurt and disappointed a lot of people and made people lose respect for me. I'm so sorry! I pray that I can one day regain your trust in who I am and have your respect!"

A month after his departure from the competition, Kennedy opened up about his experience on reality television, admitting he "wasn't ready for it."

"On Idol, that wasn't me," he told GoUpstate.com. "That world is so different. Now that I'm home, I try to be me, but I'm also scared of someone videoing me when I go to Academy or Wal-Mart. You have to worry about things like that now."

The 22-year-old scored a world record 113.97 in the short program Tuesday at the Beijing Winter Games, in a performance that included a quad flip, a triple axel and a quad lutz-triple toeloop combo.

It was a far cry from his disappointing performance at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics.

“I’m just elated,” Chen told NBC’s Andrea Joyce after the skate.

“Last Olympics, both short programs didn’t go the way that I wanted, and finally getting the opportunity to skate the program to the way that I wanted — it feels really great, it means a lot,” he said.

The record beats the previous one set by two-time defending gold medalist Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan, who had a rough start to Tuesday’s performance. Hanyu’s first jump was supposed to be a quadruple salchow, but he essentially performed single salchow instead, NBC Olympics reported.

Japan's Yuma Kagiyama was in second place behind Chen on Tuesday, and fellow Japanese skater Shoma Uno came in third.

Chen, of Salt Lake City, Utah, already had an impressive performance Friday. Chen, who has said he was "just here to have fun," said after Tuesday's event that he is thankful for every chance.

"Every opportunity that I get at competitions is one that I should be grateful for — and especially the Olympics, that’s a completely different story," Chen said. "I’m just really happy to be here."

James Harden trade rumors: Steve Nash says Nets won't trade star guard ahead of Thursday's deadline

 The James Harden situation in Brooklyn appears to be rapidly deteriorating.

He looked checked out in the Nets' loss to the lowly Sacramento Kings last week, during which he scored just four points in 37 minutes; he's reportedly frustrated about having to carry so much of the load like he did in Houston with the Rockets; he hasn't signed his extension, and last month there were reports he's thinking of leaving the Nets in the offseason.

Add it all up, and you can understand why the Nets, who are currently on a seven-game losing streak, are at least willing to discuss a Harden-for-Ben Simmons swap with the Philadelphia 76ers ahead of the trade deadline. There's certainly no guarantee such a deal gets done, however, especially not with Kevin Durant pushing for the team to keep Harden.

He believed that they could win multiple titles with Kyrie Irving and James Harden. That's why Kevin Durant pushed so hard to get Brooklyn to make that deal with Houston last year. And he still believes that. But he also believes this very strongly: that Harden and everyone else in Brooklyn is going to have to be committed to this as he's been. James Harden has told Durant, he has told Nets management that he wants to be there. They are taking his word for that. The trade deadline is Thursday. Kevin Durant is not telling the owner Joe Tsai, the general manager Sean Marks what they should do at the deadline. He's letting them handle that. But he believes this: when he comes back from this knee injury, sometime probably after the All-Star break in February, he wants a group there that is as committed as him to winning those titles. He absolutely wants to continue with James Harden, stay the course with him. I think there's still a real good chance that's the case when we get past Thursday.

You can add head coach Steve Nash to the list of people who are against a trade. Speaking to reporters on Sunday ahead of the team's matchup with the Nuggets, Nash was asked if the team would trade Harden and responded, "no." Pressed for clarification later on, Nash reiterated his comments.

Durant has been sidelined since Jan. 17 with a knee injury, and won't be back until sometime after the All-Star break. Without him in this stretch, the team is just 2-8, and has dropped all the way down to sixth place in the Eastern Conference. The Nets are suddenly in danger of being in a play-in tournament spot.

Between injuries to Durant and Joe Harris, who may be out for the season, the Kyrie Irving saga -- he can still only play in select road games as he remains unvaccinated -- and Harden's discontent, the Nets are a mess right now. It's no surprise the front office is considering all possibilities, but trading Harden for Simmons, who hasn't played this season, is not the type of deal you can make lightly.

After all, despite all of the problems the team has faced, the Nets are 24-12 when Durant is in the lineup. They aren't the overwhelming title favorite they once were, but with a healthy Durant and Harden they have as good a shot as anyone in this wide-open season. That's reason enough to stay the course, and Durant pushing for that option is only further incentive.

Should Celtics surge lead to trade deadline buying mentality for Brad Stevens?

 The Boston Celtics spent many seasons with Brad Stevens as head coach sitting idle at the trade deadline.

Before last season, the last player the Celtics added via trade during the season came a whopping six years earlier in 2015.Former Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge believed in patience and continuity during many of those seasons, holding onto assets and valuing continuity almost to a fault at times. In 2022, Stevens gets his chance to make his own impression on this group beyond a simple salary dump or two.

Per league sources, the Celtics have been one of the most active teams in the league in investigating the value of their role players the past few weeks amid an underwhelming season. Stevens elaborated about his priorities heading into the deadline with Toucher and Rich last Thursday.

“Every decision we make has to be focused on, does that decision give us the best chance at the next banner,” Stevens said. “That ultimately is the call. It’s not as focused on how your team is necessarily playing in the moment. That philosophy and recency bias will be put to the test by Stevens in the coming days. No team in the NBA is playing better basketball in 2022 so far than the Boston Celtics, having won five straight and 12 of their last 16 overall. However, that success has come against one of the easiest schedules in the league over the past month with nine of those 12 wins coming against sub .500 opponents.

Boston is demolishing bad teams, but does that mean they are building to something bigger on the contending front? They look that good, at least from a defensive standpoint.

“This is kind of what we envisioned and it’s coming to fruition now that we have some consistency with our lineups,” Ime Udoka said after limiting the Magic to 83 points.

Jaylen Brown also echoed that mindset, as Boston’s starting five continued its stellar five against opponents, outscoring them by 22 points on the year over 200 minutes.

“I would say before the season I think that, the way our team was structured, we had a defensive group,” Brown said. “We had a lot of guys who’s made names for themselves on the defensive side of the basketball. I think this is what we imagined when we all started. Despite the soft schedule, the advanced metrics indicate that Boston is far better than their 30-25 record shows. They have a +4.1 net rating on the year, which is the seventh-best number in the NBA and only 0.4 behind the top team in the East (Cavs).

There’s still quite a sizable gap between the Celtics and true contenders (Suns, Warriors) but a wide-open Eastern Conference may lead Stevens to seize the opportunity to make a run under new head coach Ime Udoka. Boston has clear needs (shooting, big man depth) and Stevens has the means to address those issues with draft picks, young talent and trade exceptions. Achieving those potential objectives while staying under the luxury tax won’t be easy but the recent play makes it at least a consideration. Adding for now and the future is a card Boston could play here.

There’s no obvious choice for the Celtics’ at the trade deadline amid the uneven season. Stevens also looks at things from the big picture so one hot month is unlikely to impact how he feels about this group’s ceiling. However, a fairly wide open Eastern Conference may make him a little bit more optimistic about this group’s chances. Being a buyer at the trade deadline seemed like a foolish idea a few weeks ago. Now, the case gets stronger for this group by the game.

2022 Pro Bowl: What we learned from AFC's win over NFC

 In a Pro Bowl overflowing with touchdown passes and interceptions, the AFC on Sunday at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium was able to earn its fifth consecutive victory over the NFC.

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Darius Leonard set the tone with a pick-six on the game’s sixth play of the game as the AFC jumped out to a lead it would never relinquish as the teams combined for seven passing touchdowns and seven interceptions. Here are five takeaways from the game.

1. Defense dominates from the jump. What the Pro Bowl lacks in physicality and urgency, it makes up for in opportunism. In an opening salvo void of hard hits, the flashiest plays still came from defenses, not from offenses. Kyler Murray, Kirk Cousins, Russell Wilson and Patrick Mahomes all threw interceptions in the first quarter. Kyler's pick, right into the hands of Darius Leonard, and Mahomes's wayward toss, a gift to Antonio Winfield Jr., were both returned for six; neither man was touched, save for half-hearted slaps. Cousins was stripped off the right side by T.J. Watt on the first play of the second quarter, resulting in a Myles Garrett scoop-and-score. Mac Jones got in on the pick action with his first regulation throw of the day. Wilson then threw another INT to a wide-open Derwin James. To top it off, Mahomes was stripped by Micah Parsons on the final play of the first half. Parsons had said leading up to his first Pro Bowl that he would channel the late Sean Taylor in his aggression in the NFL all-star game. The Cowboys rookie didn't quite level a punter, but he and his fellow defenders, who picked off each Pro Bowl QB at least once, were certainly more inspired than the offensive offensive play on Sunday. 2. Maxx makes an effort. Hometown hero Maxx Crosby made the most of his Pro Bowl debut Sunday afternoon. The Raiders edge rusher left his feet at the line of scrimmage to bat down three Murray passes in the first two quarters, including one on the first play, setting the tone for the day. Deep in the second quarter, Crosby even logged a sack of Cousins in the red zone, thwarting an NFC scoring effort. 3. Herbert a highlight. Though Sunday’s exhibition is hardly the stage to accurately grade any all-star, Justin Herbert certainly looked sterling in his Pro Bowl debut. The only quarterback to emerge unscathed without an interception in the first half, Herbert was 7 of 10 for 98 yards and hit Ravens tight end Mark Andrews for a pair of scores before his final toss in the second half was picked off. It’s been five weeks since Herbert and the Chargers’ season came to a bitter end in Las Vegas and he returned to the scene of the crime Sunday and looked like his sensational self, earning Pro Bowl Offensive MVP in the process. Maybe he wasn’t as dazzling as he was back in defeat back in Week 18, but he was certainly a highlight in the AFC’s win. (Grant Gordon)

4. Fourth-and-15 flops. Exhibition contests like the Pro Bowl are perfect venues to try out new ideas the Competition Committee is hesitant to adopt. Enter the fourth-and-15 alternative to the kickoff, a rule that allows a scoring team to opt to convert a fourth-and-15 play from its own 25 instead of kicking the ball back to its opponent following the extra point. Suggested and tabled at recent league meetings, it was adopted for experimentation at this year's Pro Bowl. The result? The AFC and NFC went a combined 0 for 8 on these attempts, resulting in short fields for their opponents and increased scoring. 5. Rookies don’t disappoint. A 15-time Pro Bowler just retired, though he wasn’t at Sunday’s festivities. And though it would be folly to suggest any player could ever follow the accomplishments of Tom Brady, it’s impossible not to wonder and prognosticate what lies ahead for the rookies who made their Pro Bowl debuts Sunday. Brady made the first of his aforementioned 15 all-star games in 2001 – his second season. Following sensational first seasons, the likes of Parsons, Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts, Jones and Steelers running back Najee Harris had their highlights. Parsons, as he’s done since the preseason, commanded notice with eight tackles and a sack. Pitts caught a fourth-quarter TD as the NFC rallied to make things interesting and Jones, who was 12 of 16 for 112 yards and a TD, hooked up with Harris on a fourth-and-2 play for seven yards to salt away the AFC’s win. Just a play prior, Jones rushed for four yards but kept going all the way into the end zone before busting out his best Griddy. Sunday was all about the best of the best (or most of them) having fun, and it’s certainly fun to imagine if any of these first-year phenoms might well have played in the first of their 15 or so Pro Bowls. If nothing less, the future is certainly bright for Chargers offensive lineman Rashawn Slater, another rookie in the game, and the aforementioned quartet. (Grant Gordon)

NFL Research: This was the AFC’s fifth consecutive Pro Bowl win, as it’s defeated the NFC each year the game’s been played since reverting back to the traditional AFC-NFC matchup following three seasons in which NFL Legends picked opposing teams.

Next Gen stat of the game: Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby and Browns defensive end Myles Garrett each had five QB pressures, but Panthers defensive end Brian Burns had a game-high six pressures to go with two sacks and a 25% pressure rate.

Luis Suarez's return to the Nou Camp was his first in front of the Barca fans and he pulled a goal back to somewhat inspire Atletico with half an hour still to play.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made his debut and held the ball up well when Barcelona were playing a man down.

Xavi's assistant was shown a red card for losing his temper on the sidelines after a tense period of play that involved some hefty challenges from both teams.

But Xavi is the head coach that will go home with a smile on his face tonight as he has taken this Barcelona side back into the top four of the league table. Simeone's team looked fragile defensively which will be a huge concern for the Argentine, especially with the Champions League knockouts just around the corner.
