REVIEW: Monstrous’ Skillful Period Horror Is Haunted By Underdeveloped Themes

Monstrous delivers an interesting period piece with solid performances, but would have benefited from a focus on its themes instead of twists.

Period horror has become one of the genre's latest trends, and with Monstrous, the '50s are explored with an eerie undertone that is hard to ignore. Perfectly playing up the decade it's depicting, Monstrous is a twisty film that starts off in one world but ends somewhere entirely different. The story is a mystery that never truly gets solved, and while that sometimes benefits the movie, the ambiguity confuses the film by the end. The central monster in this film is effective but could have been explored more. At its core, Monstrous is a mind-bending indie horror flick that deals with timely themes but ends up getting consumed by its own vagueness.

Directed by Chris Sivertson from a script by Carol Chrest, Monstrous stars Christina Ricci as Laura, a mother who flees her abusive husband with her son to an isolated, lakeside house. Soon, Laura's son Cody (Santino Barnard) starts to get visits from a ghostly presence that he calls the lady of the lake. Laura faces pressure from her new job, her landlords, and her husband's attempts to find her and Cody. However, none of that compares to the horrors she will have to face when protecting her son from supernatural forces.

Monstrous does a good amount of things right, and one of them is depicting the '50s. From Ricci's costume design to the soundtrack, the film feels like a time capsule. Ricci's performance is another big highlight. An accomplished actress whose career seems to be in the early stages of a kind of renaissance period, Ricci delivers a dynamic performance that shows both finesse and a commitment to go all out. Laura seems to hold everything together so well, but by the end, it's clear that she has been slowly unraveling on the inside throughout the whole movie. Ricci conveys this and more, further proving that she is a force to be reckoned with.

With that said, Monstrous struggles with pacing and the overall delivery of its content. The film kind of wanders around, becoming less engaging in its middle. In a lot of ways, it feels like a half-baked version of The Babadook, attempting similar ideas but faltering more often. The film depicts feminism in a time when it wasn't accepted, and the horrors Laura faces sometimes serve as a metaphor for the horror she has to deal with in real life as a strong woman who no one wants to take seriously. However, these interesting themes are never fully realized, especially after the film goes off-kilter with multiple twists that almost completely derail the movie.

The monster of the film is highly effective, reminiscent of old-school monsters with a modern twist, but it's not present in the film enough. When Monstrous works, it's a fun love letter to the monster movies of the past with something to say, but when it doesn't, it feels tedious and confused. Overall, Monstrous is an interesting effort that could have been something a bit more memorable if it focused on its central themes instead of becoming convoluted by fluff and a silly final act twist.

Actor Fred Ward has died, according to his publicist, Ron Hofmann.

The star, who brought gentlemanly gruffness to films that included The Right Stuff, Henry and June and The Player died Sunday, May 8 at the age of 79. No cause of death was given.

Ward brought reservoirs of tenderness to his tough guy roles, and plenty of street credibility. A former boxer, lumberjack and short-order cook who served in the U.S. Air Force, Ward went to acting school and got his start when he moved to Rome as a young man and worked as a mime, then a voice-over actor. That led to a few appearances in TV productions by Italian neorealist pioneer Roberto Rossellini. Ward made his U.S. movie debut as a convict alongside Clint Eastwood in Escape from Alcatraz in 1979.

"The unique thing about Fred Ward is that you never knew where he was going to pop up, so unpredictable were his career choices," Hofmann wrote in an email. "He could play such diverse characters as Remo Williams, a cop trained by Chiun, Master of Sinanju (Joel Grey) to become an unstoppable assassin in Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, or Earl Bass, who, alongside Kevin Bacon, battle giant, worm-like monsters hungry for human flesh in 'cult' horror/comedy film, Tremors (1990), or a detective in the indie film Two Small Bodies (1993) directed by underground filmmaker Beth B., or a terrorist planning to blow up the Academy Awards in The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult (1994), or the father of the lead character in Jennifer Lopez's revenge thriller Enough (2002)."

Fred Ward, the versatile character actor who starred in films like Tremors, The Right Stuff and Henry & June during a career that spanned five decades, has died at the age of 79. Ward’s rep, Ron Hoffman, confirmed the actor’s May 8 death in a statement, though no cause of death was provided.

An Air Force veteran and amateur boxer before becoming an actor — his tough guy look and gruff exterior was attained thanks to a few broken noses in the ring — Ward was equally adept when featuring in dramas, comedies and action films: His credits also include Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult, Joe Dirt and Road Trip.

“The unique thing about Fred Ward is that you never knew where he was going to pop up, so unpredictable were his career choices,” Hoffman said in a statement.

After studying acting in Rome and dubbing Italian films into English, Ward made his first major on-screen appearance with a role in the Clint Eastwood-starring Escape From Alcatraz in 1979. His first starring role was as the titular character in the 1982 film Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann, a sci-fi Western written by the Monkees’ Michael Nesmith; ironically, both Ward and Nesmith were born on the same day, Dec. 30, 1942.

Ward also portrayed astronaut Virgil “Gus” Grissom in Philip Kaufman’s hit adaptation of The Right Stuff and, seven years later, reunited with the director to play author Henry Miller in the drama Henry & June, the first-ever film to receive the MPAA’s then-new NC-17 rating in 1990.

That same year saw Ward star in two more of his best-known on-screen roles: As hard-boiled cop Hank Moseley in the adaptation of Charles Willeford’s Miami Blues — a film that Ward himself produced after acquiring the novel’s rights — and as handyman Earl Bassett alongside Kevin Bacon in the cult horror comedy Tremors. (Ward would return to that role in the direct-to-video sequel Tremors 2: The Aftershock.)

The actor also enjoyed a lengthy collaboration with his friend Robert Altman, appearing in the legendary director’s The Player, Bob Roberts and Short Cuts.

Ward continued to act on both the big and small screens through the 2000s, making guest appearances on ER, Grey’s Anatomy, United States of Tara and Leverage. His last role was a two-episode stint on the first season of HBO’s True Detective.

Tina Karol in a patriotic top flew to Japan: she was met by a billionaire with a bouquet of sunflowers

Tina Karol continues to support Ukraine. On May 14, the artist is due to give her first concert in Japan.

Karol flew to Tokyo and shared several pictures on her social networks. At the airport, the singer was met by Japanese businessman and billionaire Hiroshi Mikitani.......... He did not meet empty-handed, but presented Tina with a bouquet of sunflowers. The singer was dressed in a white top with a yellow-blue heart embroidered on the chest from the Ukrainian brand Siyai , which is called “Heart”. The cost of such a top is 900 hryvnia.

The Japanese billionaire who owns the popular Rakuten Viber messenger donated $8.7 million to our country on the second day of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In the caption under the pictures posted on Instagram and Facebook, Tina wrote: "Extremely grateful to the great friend of Ukraine, philanthropist Hiroshi Mikitani for supporting Ukraine! To be continued."

Hiroshi Mikitani also posted on his Instagram about Karol's visit.

In the Japanese media, Karol was called "Ukrainian Britney Spears." Here is what they write: “Tina Karol appeared in the airport lobby after 20:00 and spoke to the press: “Ukraine is screaming. On behalf of my native country, I want to appeal to how beautiful and courageous it is. Thanks to everyone in Japan for their support. I believe that my country can be restored," Karol said in English.

Tina will perform as a special guest at the "Rakuten Girls Award" on May 14 and sing for the audience.

Popular Ukrainian singer Tina Karol, who takes part in charity projects around the world, went to Japan. At the airport, the famous Japanese businessman and billionaire Hiroshi Mikitani met the star with a bouquet of sunflowers. On the second day of the Russian invasion, Nikitani, who owns the popular Rakuten Viber messenger, donated $8.7 million to Ukraine.

“I am extremely grateful to the great friend of Ukraine, philanthropist Hiroshi Nikitana for supporting Ukraine! To be continued, ” wrote Tina Karol under a joint photo.

In Tokyo, Tina Karol is scheduled to perform, as well as meet with officials and diplomats.

The singer is actively involved in charity work to support Ukraine during the war. In Warsaw, she organized the headquarters of the information resistance, and also took part in a patriotic performance during the football matches of our teams.

Tina Karol, who was in Germany two days ago, flew to Japan. At the airport, the star was met by her fans with the Ukrainian flag - the pool of Karol's fans is really huge, even in Japan they are.

To reporters and fans, the artist got off the plane in a knitted T-shirt with a yellow-black heart.

But the main thing was ahead: at the Tokyo airport, Karol was met by Japanese businessman and billionaire Hiroshi Mikitani. He gave the singer a bouquet of yellow sunflowers.

" I am extremely grateful to the great friend of Ukraine, philanthropist Hiroshi Nikitana for supporting Ukraine! To be continued," wrote Tina Karol in her social networks.

As you know, already on the third day of the war, Nikitani, who owns Rakuten, which controls the popular Ukrainian messenger Viber, donated $8.7 million to Ukraine. Most likely, his meeting with the Ukrainian singer will entail some kind of charitable mission.

Vesti.ua found out that Tina Karol is scheduled to perform in Tokyo, as well as meetings with officials and diplomats. Recall that the singer in wartime is actively involved in charitable activities to support Ukraine during the war. So on March 20, Karol performed in Poland at the festival “Together with Ukraine” . And on May 8, in Berlin, Tina Karol and Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk took part in a commemorative event of laying flowers at the Tiergarten memorial on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation, as well as the 77th anniversary of the liberation of Europe from National Socialism.

Britney Spears' nude Instagrams are sparking concern. But they may be a form of empowerment, experts say.

When Britney Spears became more active on her Instagram account after her conservatorship ended, she began posting and deleting nude photos of herself. Most recently, her "photo dump" of naked pictures was met with mixed reactions, as some expressed concern for her well-being. However, others defended Spears' decision.

"I swear people forget that (Britney) was in a prison of her father's design for the past 13 years. She missed the years when we were all terrible at Instagram and used those tacky in-app filters. She's feeling herself. Let her be," user @mattxiv tweeted Monday.

Feminists and sociologists say over the past year the public has witnessed Spears fight for autonomy – over her body, her career, her finances, her future. While many facets of Spears life remain opaque, including clarity around any existing mental health issues, experts say she has made repeated efforts to reclaim power– whether by addressing the court about what she called an abusive conservatorship or by posting nude photos of her body.

Britney Spears is 'speaking her truth.':Are we listening?

In August, the singer explained that her controversial selfies were an attempt to reclaim her body after years of feeling constrained, self-conscious and powerless.

"I bet you’re wondering why I’d expose my body NOW … well it’s because I was born into this world naked and I honestly feel like the weight of the would has been on my shoulders and it’s made me view myself that way …I wanted to see myself in a lighter way … naked … like the way I was born," she wrote in a now-deleted Instagram post.

Carla Manly, a clinical psychologist, says deciding what to share (or not share) can be liberating for those who were stripped of their autonomy.

"When our rights are violated and our freedom of choice is taken away, it's very different from when we make a conscious, personal choice to divulge information or offer a selfie – whether it's nude or not," Manly says. "So if indeed Britney feels this is her time to make this choice, it can be extraordinarily empowering since she is actively choosing to offer those visuals."

'It's about personal choice'
Spears, who had been under a conservatorship for 13 years, is experiencing autonomy for the first time in more than a decade. Experts say it's possible she is experimenting with her body and how it feels to be sexual on her own terms. For instance, Spears previously said that during the conservatorship, her body was heavily policed, and she said was forced to have an IUD.

"As we move through adulthood, part of the journey is being able to find your personal independence, your personal voice, and that was taken from Britney," Manly says. "So there may definitely be a conscious or unconscious desire for her to understand her own needs and express them. Or to understand her individuality and express that on her own accord."

Britney Spears, Pamela Anderson had their trauma exploited. What it means to hear their side.

For high-profile women like Spears, whose career was built in part on her sexual appeal, experts say it may be especially liberating to display your body on your own terms. In 2016, Kim Kardashian defended her decision to post a naked selfie by saying, "I am empowered by my body. I am empowered by my sexuality. I am empowered by feeling comfortable in my skin." Other celebrities like Lizzo and Ashley Graham have used their social media accounts to encourage self-love and confidence.

Unlike a curated magazine cover or professional photoshoot, Manly says that a casual NSFW selfie can provide some a "sense of control over their image."

"Our society has so many mixed messages surrounding female sexuality. If it's done for a notable magazine, it's seen as artistic. But when it's done as a personal offering, that's when judgement comes into play and it becomes 'exhibitionist' or 'controversial,'" Manly says. "It's about personal choice and us choosing what to show and what not to show."

Naked selfies may be empowering for the individual. Experts say it can come at a social cost.
Sarah Leonard, a history professor at Simmons University, says it's possible for women to reveal their bodies in ways that are empowering. But as more are exercising control around erotic photos and sexual content, it's impossible to ignore that those choices are made within a culture where preoccupation with women's bodies contributes to their objectification and exploitation.

"There are scenarios in which a person may be happy with what they produce and how they are paid for it, but if we zoom out further, if we don't just think about how that one person who made the content feels about it, or how the one viewer who views the content feels about it, then we ask how it contributes to social norms," said Emily Rothman, a professor of occupational therapy at Boston University who studies sexual violence and pornography. "If we're monetizing sexuality or beauty or availability or instant access to somebody, there are all kinds of things that we're monetizing in that situation that may then have implications for how people treat each other."

'You can't win':Those infamous edited yearbook photos and society’s obsession with girls' bodies

Whether posting hyper-sexualized images on Instagram, performing provocative dances on TikTok or sharing pornography on OnlyFans, women in 2022 have more control over what they share about their bodies and how, but they still do not control how those images are interpreted or experienced once they enter the public domain.

"There is what a woman who is offering an image of herself intends, and then, once it begins to circulate in the world, there are the very different meanings it takes on, and in some ways women can lose their power over those," Leonard says.

Rothman said when a woman chooses to share her body as an individual action, it's possible she can also be mindful of the larger social context in which she operates.

"There is a way in which you can simultaneously try to push back against the social norms that you wish would change," she said, "helping people to interpret the content that you've made, expressing your hope for the impact it will have."
